I am investigating pc recording software. i play the bass, and i would like to record that and then use midi/audio for everything else. Here are my questions:

*I've been looking at cubase. If I buy the software package am I ready to go (assuming of course that I have a computer and appropriate sound card) or do I need to purchase other hardware/software--soft synths, drum samplers, etc? Keep in mind that I am just starting out so I'm not expecting to break the bank loading up on things until I've put serious time in.
*Steinberg makes cubasis, which is about 1/4 the price of cubase. Assuming "you get what you pay for", what exactly am I get with cubase that I wouldn't get with cubasis? Would it be wise as a novice to start with cubasis, or are there not many options with it? *it might be important to note here that I am interested in music like can and tortoise and would like to be able to experiment a lot with drum programming, etc.

Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you don't get any replies here you could try asking in the Cubase forum

Cubase (or Cubasis) is just a multi-track software. It won't make sounds, drum samples, synths or the like. It will only record them. In other words, it's not an instrument. It will record intruments.

In addition to your bass, you will need other stuff for sounds. Real synth or soft synth software, drum sample software...

Also, to record MIDI, your soundcard must support it and you're going to need a MIDI controller.

Regarding Cubasis, it depends on how serious you are about recording. If it's only a weekend hobby, go with it. Otherwise, go with the real thing and take the time to learn it (lots of time). But be aware that there are many multi-track softwares out there. Some of them much cheaper. Depends exactly what you need it to do and the amount of money you can spend, considering you may need other gear, like a mic.

Welcome and good luck!
