Hi, my name is Dan. I have just started getting into home recording. I have read many articles and I have some questions to ask. So far, I have recorded my friend a demo which sounds very good with N-track and Soundforge. I have used a Creative Sound card, adapters to hook up multiple intruments and a Radioshack 60 mic. What I have done is either recorded the tracks serpartely and mixed them down, or I have hooked up a mic and an intrument and recorded everything on one line. The downside of recording to one line, is im loosing sound quality and most of all, I can edit seperate tracks(effects, volume ect.) What I want to be able to do is to record multiple tracks seperately, which is a common task for my software but Im not sure exactly what hardware I need. I was wandering if It is possible to use an outboard mixer and after recording, sending the tracks one at at time to the computer. I have no experience what so ever with using mixers, so basically I just wanted to know what I need to get to be able to send multiple tracks to my pc by using my sound card. Or would it be cheaper to get a multiple port sound card, and if so what kind of cards would be a good investment. Thanks!

a mixer will only allow you to mix and eq the instruments separately, with the setup you describe. They'll still record to one track. A soundcard with multiple inputs and software that will record multiple tracks are the only solutions to the type of recording you want to do, as far as I know. Someone more knowledgeable may know better.

Atwork is right. In order to get separate tracks on your computer, you need a soundcard with multiple inputs. Eight in/out soundcards can be had for under US$500 The Hoontech C-port is a real "bang for the buck" setup. Not the best but probably the best value (imho).

I havent tried that particular card, but Aardvark makes great cards....the preamps on it are pretty good, but you are getting 8 channels of the same preamp.....if I need to record many tracks at once, the Q10 would be the card I would get........
