Hey there, I am a newbie to the whole PC recording area, but I have a couple questions about it. I just picked up a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro 12 channel mixer, a few mics, and I am wondering what I need to pipe the mixer in to my computer to do some recording. So far, my only thought was to run a line from the tape-out on the mixer to the line-in on my SB-LIVE. Would that work, or are there other techniques that would work better for this?

Does the Mackie 1202 have channel inserts? You can run a cleaner signal out from these than from the line outs, since it only goes through the preamp and not the faders and other electronics on the mixer.

I agree that the channel inserts would be a better way, the inserts on mackie boards are typically a TRS type where the tip is the return and the ring is the send, typically what mackie says,is if you use a standard TS cable and stick it in the insert to the first click (half way in) you can use it as a send.
P.S. - If you are recording directly to the PC, make sure you set the channel fader at unity gain and use line/mic gain trim pot(they are combined on the mackies) to adjust the level going into the computer. This will prevent gain staging and give you a cleaner signal.

In order to use a TS line from the insert, I would have to have a 1/4" input on the computer, wouldn't I?

Adapters... you would need something with two 1/4" TS plugs on one end and a stereo 1/8" miniplug on the other.
