Here's my situation:

I want to do digital recording on the cheap. I am debating whether I should use my upgraded home PC to do so or bite the bullet buy something like the Boss BR-8. I see that I can get Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 for around $200 now. I thinking of buying it along with a card like the E-magic audiowerks 2 for around $200 to do my recording.

Is this a good idea? Does anyone have any better ideas? I'd like to stay under $500.

What kind of computer do you have now, and what kind of statistics (CPU, RAM, CD-drive...etc.etc.)?

I have upgraded to an AMD Duron 700 mhz with 128 meg of RAM. I have plans to upgrade the CD drive to a CDR drive and the SB16 to something better. Hard drive is 4.7 Gig.

huh???

I see that I can get Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 for around $200 now.

You can get PA9 brand new off ebay for less than that. Check around before you drop 200 on pa8.

I don't know about the PC recording, but I can vouch for thr Boss BR-8. It is an awesome tool and designed with the guitar player in mind; it has tons of guitar and vocal effects at your disposal. You'll need about $700 to get one new though. If you care to hear what I've done with my BR-8 then check out our site at www.mp3.com/twofisted

PC would be more powerful and depending on what soundcard you get a lot cleaner..
