PC recording in mono

My PC (in every recording software I use) has started to record everything in mono for no apparent reason. For example, when I feed a stereo lead into the soundcard when recording the output from my amplifier, I hear stereo through the PC speakers, but the recording turns it into a mono version. It appears to be something to do with it only recognising one channel and then converting it into a mono signal. Can anyone help?

More details would help! What soundcard?, what recording program?

Help us help you! :)

I would think you're not enabling both Left and Right inputs to record in your recording software.

Many built in soundcards have a way to pick the recording device in a control panel reached from the sound icon in the taskbar. Usually, the default for these is "Stereo Mix" (actually the output of the cards playback mixer or "what you hear"). Normally, for recording the one you should pick is "Line-in". However, I've noticed some also have a "Mono Mix" option. Have you got that selected instead?

If you can't find this option, go to Windows/Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and go to the advanced properties page for the Recording device. Look at the recording mixer and see what's selected.

If you have Adobe Audition, there's a shortcut to the windows recording mixer (actually it's a selector) in one of the menu's.

This Works

try changing the input device from mono to stereo in your software. that is your problem
