All,
I've been putting together a PC recording system for over a year, and I just bought Fostex's new D824. It was very nice to record my first tracks about 20 min after formating.
From my experiences, I give the following advice:
1. Do a search and find a good DAW builder, one who knows the compatability issues and problems(and there are many).
Just a couple off the top of my head: http://www.soundchaser.com (very helpful), http://www.digitalproaudio.com(where I bought my D824, they are starting to build systems) Feel free to list your favorite builders here.
2.Use Pentium for audio. I own Athlon and yes they are faster and cheaper than Pentiums, and they keep Intel prices down, but audio software and hardware developers don't write drivers or build their products with AMD in mind. Some say, in their webb sites, that they are not compatible with AMD. This may change, but who knows when. For example, I use Pulsar and the Pulsar forum says that PIII w/ASUS csul? mobo works great with Pulsar.
3. Don't have a either or mentality. The D824 I just got gives me portability and crash free recording. I will still use Pulsar and Samplitude for processing and my CDRW for CD burning. It just makes a more complete system.

"Don't have a either or mentality."

Exactly. And I think you can apply that approach, not just to recorders, but to the whole enterprise. Why not get someone with better gear and experience to mix/master your stuff? Or maybe you mix some of the tracks at home, and get a pro to mix other tracks in the studio. Flexibility.
