PBass ThumbRest

This may be a stupid question, but why are the thumbrests on PBasses below the strings? How would you rest your thumb on that? From what I have gathered it was a leftover idea from when PBasses replaced uprights. If anyone knows, please enlighten me...
 
The original idea, grasshopper, was that the bassist would anchor his fingers on the "rest" while actuating the strings with his thumb.

This was almost as popular as golfing with hand grenades, and later the thumb rests became actual THUMB rests. They began to reside on the top side of the strings, where we anchor our thumbs while fingering the strings.

That would make sense, as far as being usefull, not sure.
I know when I installed one on my PBass I went with the topside installation. Thanks
