A local pawn shop has the following mics. The prices they ask are ridiculous but I'm putting the prices I think they are worth.

CAD E 300 $200
AKG C1000 $100
Oktava 319 $100

Do those sound like reasonable prices for them used?

I know those are basic cheap mics. Would you guys recomend them as a set to compliment my SM 57 and ECM8000's?

Would I have a pretty choice of quality and color with those? I will mainly be doing acoustic guitar, percussion and vocal recording.

Take that $400 bucks and put it into one, fairly decent, Large Condensor mic.

Wont I be limiting myself by the sound of the LD? I want a LD just not sure if that should be my only good mic.

I had a friend who swore by the AKG 414. They are pretty pricey but if it truly is a wonder mic I wouldnt mind springing for it.

Tex, for well under $400 you may want to check out the Studio Projects
C3 as it is a multi-pattern mike. The C series has a nice vintage sound.
The B series when it comes out will also have a multi-pattern mike,
and a single pattern tube mike. The website is www.studioprojectsusa.com
There is a listening CD they'll send you if requested.

AKG will release a new mic in 4 years, you might wanna wait for that one. I've heard it's supposed to sound great.

The E300..Is a large diaph. multi pattern..for 200.00 it would be a good deal!

Re: "AKG will release a new mic in 4 years"

Meshuggah, patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet!

since it wont be your only mic, it is the obvious choice to round out your collection....with a v67, the ecm8000's and a sm57 there wont be many situations you cant pull out pretty well......

It works both ways, Some Pawn brokers think theres gold in that there gear.

And others have been sitting on gear for so long they will sacrifice alot to get rid of it. or just dont know what they got.

Ill only deal with the latter.

I was at a shop the other day and saw 2 AKG d112 bass drum mics for 225.00 each. (thats retail at mars and MF). but they were sitting there long enough that they agreed to sell me one for 150.00. (still not low enough, I rent one at 10.00 a day from mars when I need it).

I think $200 is a great price for that CAD E200. New they're $400. It's a great mic too. I would venture to say that $100 is a little low for the C1000. I'd say $120 is closer to a fair price. For those of you who don't know, the C1000 is a great mic on guitar cabinets. Especially for clean tones.

The prices they have on their equipment is higher than retail for most stuff. I havent bought anything from them before so I'll have to see how low they are going to go.

I have a feeling they see big condensor mics and assume they cost a grand new.

I think I'd prefer to stay unenlightened ;)

no, i meant skip the pawn shop deals (these anyway)...if you already have a sm57 and some ecm8000's id go with a LD condenser like the Marshall MXLv67

I think that's the first time I've seen the C1000 characterized as a "great" mic for anything. I've always heard it characterized as a rather dismal mic on what ever it's used on. To be fair though, I've never heard anyone comment on it being used on a cab for a clean guitar before.

They werent too happy when I showed them the retail prices on their mics and wouldnt go down low enough.

I did end up buying a 63 or 67(serial numbers are the same) Gibson 12 String for $370. It's pretty beat up but it actually plays decently as is and they are going for $700-1500 on the internet.

Where have you heard all these awful things about the C1000, other than on these messageboards? I know Harvey doesn't like it, but that doesn't mean it's crap. I've used it very successfully on tamborine, drum overhead, acoustic, bells, xylophones, all the sources that small diapragms tend to do well with. On a lot of things I prefer them to the MC012s. I'm not alone in appreciating these mics either:

I for one think they're great, especially since you can get them used for $100 - $125 used. I get the feeling that a lot of you have dismissed this mic without even using it.

I've never seen a mic that is more overwhelmingly slammed upon by people that engineer for a living. There was a recent thread on it on Rec.Audio.Pro, and their opinion of it hasn't changed.

I personally put a great deal of stock in what Harvey's opinion is on mics. But make no mistake, Harvey Gerst is not the reason for the bad reputation of the C1000. The overwhelming consensus among those who use it is that it sucks.

If you like it, use it. I'm glad you get the results you want from them. I've never used the C1000 before. I've never owned a Yugo either. I would give them a listen if I ever got my hands on a pair, but I won't go out of my way to get my hands on some.

I have one, I think it pretty much sucks! Sorry, but I do,, and I've thrown a lot of instruments at it, just to give it a chance. I'll sell ya mine for 100 bucks, but its missing the little pattern adapter thingy that goes inside the mic. Everything else is there though, and it works.
