Bring Back Transfat!
I don't know jack about mics.

I just bought an AT4033.
Where sould the settings be for vocals and micing a guitar amp?

I suppose you'll get a grip on all of this fairly soon [if your experience is anything like mine was when I started out]? First the AT 4033 is a great microphone for both of the particular applications you've mentioned so you're off to a really good start!

I would definitely keep an eye on your input/output levels on your mic preamp & recorder--don't overload them-- start with the gain controls all of the way down and bring them up a little at a time. For electric guitar, I would use the microphone pad's lower setting if the mic is close to the speaker and/or if you going to play at higher volumes. I've found that large condensers mics tend to like to be a bit further out from the source than a dynamic mic would normally be. For vocal use, that would depend upon the singer's style and microphone technique. How close is he/she to the mic and how loud are they singing? Do you have a wind screen for your 4033?

It shouldn't take too long for you to hear the proper levels. The signal to noise ratio is really important so use as much gain as you can without getting feedback or too much noise/hiss in the background. Make some test passes until it sounds good to you...the more you experiment the more you'll find the right sounds for for what you wish to do. Good luck & have fun--this is what it's all about anyway!:)

With a 4033 on vocals, try it with the low end roll off switch engaged and no attenuator. On a guitar amp, use the pad for sure. By the way, it's a small diaphram mic (5/8").

Track Rat,

You're right about the 4033 mic's 5/8" size diaphragm. I always o forget that fact when I look at the outer case case--a large condenser "in disguise?" I wonder what size diaphragm is in the AT4047SV do you happen to know?:)

i thought the 4033 was a cardioid only version of the 4050?! isn't that so? i also thought audio technica's small diaphragm mics started with 30--, like the 3035 etc. gee, guess how many audio technica mics i own. :D

If it will add to your confusion, AT advertises the 3035 as an LD, 26mm. Metrically-challenged, as we prefer to called instead of ignorant, I dunno how big that is. Run, Forrest, run!

Thanks Aus! This yank'll take all the edumacation he can get.

I think I prefer the vocal and guitar sound without the roll-off switch engaged.

with the roll off , it gets a bit bright for my taste. I guess it all depends on the singer, but I never use it.

4-7 inches away on vox is magic

Hi CyanJaguar,

You are very correct in your observations! I find that a lot of times I won't use the pads or cut switches either. Just simply use mic placements [along with setting the mic preamp at lower input levels as not to overload anything]. This method can achieve great tones. It all comes down to listening anyway, doesn't it?:)

hey pinkstrat,

did you get a 4033?

congrats. how do you like its sound?
