Although looking at the AP's, they look pretty good too. And cheaper! :D

Thanks for the info guys :)

I went to the Guitar sinner and got the AP ones. They look like a good quality but to my surprise they are all short

they only reach 75% of the patchbay :( ....so i guess i'l have to relable the patchbay

Is that normal?

Is that normal?

Nope. its bullshit.

Should have warned ya against those. I threw mine away. They dont connect very well and are too short for a normal patchbay. The only real good way to do affordable patch cables is to roll your own. You can get Canare or Mogami cable for about 0.40 a foot and Neutrik TRS ends for $1.30 each and just put in the work. Seeing that GC charges $30-40 for a balanced 3ft patch cable, its a pretty good option

Here where I shop for cable:

Wow where do you get newtrick trs plugs so cheap?

If its not a secret :D

Just about any electronics supply place will carry them (mouser, digikey, newark etc) I'm talking about the short handle metal ones of course. The nicer ones are more ($3 for the "pro" up to 9$ for the gold plated) redco's prices are pretty much the same for ones and twos but the supply houses will give you a good price break on 10 or 20

Canare Starquad and roll your own. It takes a little bit of time to solder up a pile, but it is worth it. You get a better cable for cheap and they last forever. I pretty much have my solder station ready to go at a moments notice and plop down with a beer and South Park and solder away.

Write a review of them. Foot long patch cables are nuts.

I actually like to have a number of cable lengths on hand... keeps the bay a bit neater when in use...

thanks guys,i decided to keep them just in case. They look like good quality cables, they are just short thats all,lol

plus i'm too lazy to return them especialy when they have nothing better there. :(

18 inches or so keeps the bay pretty neat, too, but it should reach from one side of a single patchbay to to the other. IMHO, anything less than that is just more trouble than it is worth.

In my experience, you will -always- find yourself needing "just one more long cable" and only being able to find a short one. I can't tell you how much I hated short patch cables in my analog synth days.... Never again.

Just a silly questin about cabling here. Is it ok to use balanced cable to go between unbalanced i/o? I imagine it makes the same connection, there's just an unused "ring" portion floating there. I am switching from a Behringer (balanced i/o) mixer to Tascam M-320b (mostly unbalanced) and now I have to seriously redo my cabling.

ADAT yes it is,like u said its just a extra ring thats all :)

I think StarQuad is overkill for patchbay cables. That's a lot of extra hassle soldering. I make my own cables as well, but use Connectronics Musiflex balanced cables with Neutrik ends. Very flexible cable that sounds good and is easy to solder because it has a drain wire.

It's perfectly fine. The ring is on the inside of the shield, so even if it doesn't get grounded on either end, it still shouldn't turn into a significant antenna. :)
