I am looking for a used quality crossover for a community theater. The Furman that I have pulled from the rack was not transparent enough. I am considering the following makes and I would appreciate any input as to their quality.

Ashly
Rane
BSS
dbx

I have a Rane MX22 with no complaints, they are pretty cheap to find these days. FYI, these are active crossovers, not passive.

As far as I am concerned, the BSS by far would be the better quality crossover of those you have listed. Probably the most expensive too though. As far as Rane goes, I have run into far more Rane crossovers and EQ's that have serious issues over the years than those that do not. The DBX stuff always seems to sound just ok, and the Ashly stuff I find to be a small step up from the DBX ( when comparing comparably priced units ).

I picked up a Rane graphic EQ that had the serious issue of having had about 10 of the fader knobs broken off! Also the power supply had something going on as well.

A plus for Rane is they could still supply me replacement faders on a 10 year old unit, and they are easy to fix :)

Honestly, that is a plus. The rane stuff I have used always seems to sound "OK", as long as it is functioning properly. The problem I have is that the majority of the Rane stuff I have run across is not working properly. I have noticed that something inside the crossovers and EQ's tends to get screwed up and they tend to develop buzzes very easily. I do not know what it is, but probably 3 out of 4 Rane crossovers and EQ's I have run up against buzz. In most of those situations where I was able to get something to replace them, the replacement immediately worked fine.

Other recommendations

Are there other quality active crossovers that you would recommend? The system that it would have to work in is analogue.

Klark Teknik, Lake, Dolby, XTA etc... All make excellent crossovers, all are fairly pricey.

I have a peavey V4X 4way mono (think it's 2 way stereo) and it's a very nice unit. Zero bleed. Each channel gain has a pull to mute knob. Every thing fully adjustable with a 40hz HI pass 20k low pass.

Have had it for 10 years with no problems. It has been pretty babied though.

I like it, but I don't know if it's still made.
