Hi All
i'm using cool edit pro/adobe audition
i'm new to all this home recording malarky, i'm doing a few shows on an internet radio station. i have a song that i want to use as a background to advertise a gig event. what i'm trying to do is play the track on normal vol for a few seconds then fade it down so i can speak over it, then fade it back up......but try as hard as i can i cant find how to do it!!
any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Rob

use a compressor to duck the music signal when the vocal mic is in use.
side chain the vocal mic do a little research

Is the amount of time you need to lower the volume variable? ie. do you want to do this live, or is it prerecorded?

Ducking, as mentioned above, is one way to do it. I think it's actually the most common way for what you're talking about.

But, just to give you another option....if you know exactly which parts you want to lower, and how long they are, all you have to do is select the part(s) you want lower and "Select" , "Highlight", or "Split" them from the rest of the music track. I'm not familiar with cool edit pro/adobe audition, so I don't know what function that program uses. But all DAW's have their own way of selecting a section or splitting the beginning and the end of a section from the rest of the track. You can them lower the volume of that part by drawing a fade, etc....

By far the simplest and best way to do this is just use the Audition "volume envelopes". Exactly how to do this is dealt with in the manual but basically you just put a couple of cue points on the music track and use your mouse to drag down the level where you start to speak and back up where you finish. You can control how quick the fades are by dragging the cue points around and move them to suit if you change the voice.

It takes literally a couple of seconds to set up and is totally adjustable.

Cheers guys
i also should have said i'm a complete novice when it comes to using these kinds of programs ( only been using cool edit for about 3 weeks) so i'm still getting to grips with all the functions.
Kip4 - i have no idea what "Ducking" is...lol
Armistice - It's all pre recorded (just as well really with the amount of mistakes i make..lol)
Bobbsy - i'll have a look at the help files for "volume envelopes"...thanks

If the "Help" isn't clear enough, come back and ask. I only didn't go into more detail because getting to the volume envelopes is done slightly differently depending on what version of AA you're using.

What's with the desire to do everything automatically instead of taking a couple of seconds to adjust levels manually?

Side chaining takes time to set up properly and the result is never as good as simply listening to the audio and ducking it exactly as you want by hand (or by volume envelope).

In any case, if the OP is really on Cool Edit (which hasn't even existed for about 8 or 9 years) it doesn't offer side chaining anyway.

hiya bobbsy
just thought i'd let you know i looked into the volume envelopes thing and it did exactly what you said it would, worked a treat....thanks a million.
now i just need to learn the other 3 million functions....lol

Thanks for taking the time to come back and let us know how it went! It's always nice to hear a successful outcome!
