parametric EQ

I understand the concept of a parametric EQ and how you can apply it, but how do you adjust it with an EQ pot on a mixer? I mean, I see +-15 dB pots and freq pots, but how do you, for example, increase 1k, decrease .5k, and increase .15k?
 
first, you need to check what range the parametric eq pot that you're going to use is working in. let's say you have a mixer with a parametric mid eq, and let's say it works between 500hz and 5000hz (remember this is only an example). turn the frequency pot fully to the left and your eq will work at 500hz, turn it fully to the right and it will work at 5000hz. set it at 12 o'clock and you'd be working the 2250hz area.

it's often difficult to say exactly what frequency you want to boost or cut. to make it easier, have somebody play the instrument you want to eq, set the db knob to a full boost (or cut) and then start turning the frequency knob back and forth SLOWLY to find what find the frequency you want to work with. just be careful with the overall volume to spare speakers and ears.

Yeah Mic, full boost can be dangerous, use about 6-10 db boost or cut, approximately 9 oclock or 3 oclock to be safe it should be enough to hear the freq clearly.
 
Jagpunk... you only get to mess with as many frequencies as you have parametric bands... so you can't mess with different frequencies if you only have one parametric band (unless the "set" frequencies happen to be the ones you need to change).

The most I've seen on home equipment is two.
