Hello All,

I am in the market for a parametric equalizer to add to my rack. I would like to use this directly in my audio chain while recording to gently filter out frequencies I'm not interested in for a given instrument. For this reason I am hoping for something transparent. Previously I have only EQ'd after recording (software-based) and think that an outboard equalizer would be a good tool to add.

I have read up on other posts that are similar to my issue and was hoping that those who have used the EQ units I'm considering could chime in.

My budget is around $300. I have mainly been looking at older single-channel units to combat the price. So far I am looking at:

1. Klark-Teknik DN405
2. Rane PE-17
3. Ashly PQX-571

Anyone out there with comments/recommendations on these 3 units as well as others I should be considering? Thanks for the help in advance.

I recently went through the same thought process. While I still mostly tweak (including EQ) after I track, I'm a sucker for real buttons and knobs--I just like the response of the rack gear. So to have "out of the box" options for eq, I got two single channel parametric EQs. I went with the Rane PE-15 (the predecessor to the PE-17 on your list). The price was right on this older model and I was able to find them on eBay.

I haven't had them long, but so far I like them. They're clean and quiet and do what they're supposed to do.

Used, the ASC goes for around 450 or 500, I'd save up for one of those (with or without the tranny)

Some really good suggestions. Saving up for an ASC is an interesting idea, and I do love that Speck gear. It would certainly get your the clean transparent sound youa re looking for.

That said, I own a Klark Teknik DN410, which is the two channel verion of the DN405. It's a very nice eq that for some reason you can get pretty cheap on eBay despite the fact that it's a full-on professional unit.

I used to own a Rane PE-17 and it's good but didn't thrill me at all.

Of the suggestions so far I'd go with the DN405 or Speck ASC.

Klark Teknik DN410
That looks way cool major... I'm intrigued... I read the documentation on it and love that you can chain the two channels for ten individual freqs. I also noticed that stock, it's electrnically balanced, but you can order it transformer balanced... Which do you have? and would you consider this a "transparent" or "musical" EQ

Alright, thanks for the good suggestions. I'll read up on some of these units. Always nice to have some people around who have already been through your situation! Can't wait to get one and experiment.

Happy Recording!
