I have been lurking for a while so I thought that I would finally post. I recently purchased a Mackie 1604VLZ pro mixer and HD24 to do some recording.

My question is, if I use the direct outs on the 1604 should I pan before going to the HD24 or after? I noticed that the direct outs are post everything, so I wasn't sure if I pan before or after recording. Any help would be great.

I am recording my drums so right now I will be using Ch 1 for kick, Ch 2 for snare, Ch 3 for OH (left), Ch 4 for OH (right). If I get some additional mics, I will probably end up micing the toms.

You can't pan a direct out.

They are post fader, but the pan controls don't affect the direct send.

Think about it. The direct out is one mono channel. Panning indicates panning between two channels.

You can pan your monitor mix as you record, but each out will still go straight to whatever input on the HD24 that it is connected to.

You'll do your panning on playback/mixdown.

You better not be a troll.
