Hi all

There is an item on eBay in the UK (I would post the link but the forum won't let me until I have made 10 posts! ID=110935688373). It is for Quantegy 456 on 10.5", said to be new but not sealed.

I contacted the buyer to ask why it wasn't sealed if it was new, and he said it was a new pancake that he has put onto a reel. Am I correct that a new pancake would also be sealed and so there isn't any way to find if this tape really is new?

Thanks
Tim

Dear 200gerry,

Hi there

You say this item is new, but it doesn't appear to be sealed. In what sense is it new?
Thanks
Tim

I like maple syrup on my panca....oh...nevermind. :)

Not sure what you are asking here...?

If you are asking if the tape is new....there's really no way anyone can answer that here.
Should new tape be sealed? Yeah, in a perfect world, but if it's tape someone had, then opened, but then never used...it's still new, but not sealed. :)

Thanks, I was just asking for confirmation that a new pancake would also be sealed, so I have no way of knowing with this one apart from by buying it :)

Thanks anyway
Tim

I had a pancake of 456 once - I don't remember it being sealed, though it was brand new. I might take a look at my spare 406 pancakes, actually

In the past, I've bought brand new pancakes from Quantegy that are not sealed.

Of course, that means it may or may not actually be new ... there is a sticker that holds the tape down that should be fully intact if new.

I've never bought a case of 456 pancakes. However, other quantegy 1/4" pancakes I've bought by the case (632) aren't sealed, and came bulk, separated by styrofoam wedges, but no separate packaging. So it *could* be new. However, the guy either did a poor job putting it on a reel, or it's been wound, because it should be nice and smooth. the picture isn't that good, but the tape isn't all flat. Again, that doesn't mean it isn't new, but is a data point to consider.

Bottom line is you have to take the seller's word for it. Pancakes come in a box usually 10 separated by Styrofoam but not individually sealed. Ampex/Quantegy pancakes were also sold in individual chipboard boxes that look like single reel boxes. In the latter case the pancake is sealed. They also come individually in plastic cases. If in plastic cases they aren't sealed in plastic wrap.

It looks like I'm a bit late with this, but I can confirm that my 1/2" 406s are not sealed.

I've purchased both 1/4" and 1/2" RMGI pancakes and can confirm they don't come sealed. Don't know of any others that do, either. Cardboard boxes only, as well.

I've gotten reels that were in a bag, and in a box...but not any in *sealed* bags.

The ones in bags were easy to tell if new or used....when I opened the box, I could see that I was the first since the time it was packed, just by how the bag was folded in the exact same spot/position, and with the BASF/EMTEC stuff, they often have the end taped down with the same code printed on the end, and there would be zero "curl" on that end piece.
Just no way to remove all that, use the tape, and then put it all back....without leaving any signs of usage. :D
