I am having a problem when i record palm mutes on my electric. When I play it back it sounds like its overloading or something. I tried putting a compressor plugin on it but i didnt use a compressor on the way in simply because i dont have one. The mic I used was an audio technica mb1k. Here's a sample of it http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=4508 .Any adivise would be greatly appreciated. thanks

it's probably overloading your speakers. it sounds fine here. it does sound pretty woofy though (still not distorting or anything). you might want to cut some lo's.

Ditto...no overload or distortion (other than the good kind)...I also think it sounds a little too much mid-bass. A touch of EQ would fix that though.

okay thanks. about what frequency would you cut it at?

Micter is making a good point...how does the amp sound compared to the recorded version? What I think he's getting at is that you really want to get the very best "naked" recording possible before you start hitting the effects.

To me, your recording already sounds like it has a LOT of mid-scoup. I pushed it all back up to flat with my parametric then added a wide little up bump at 2500. I really like that sound a bit better but, remember...get the best sounding raw recording possible before going after the EQ and effects.

If your recording doesn't sound like what you're hearing when playing, try moving the mic around, turn down the distortion on the amp a bit and put some of the mids back in if you've got the smiley face going already.

Keep fiddling with it...sounds like you're going to have a hard time getting a good recording if your playback is messed up...I would probably start there then regroup.

Peace my brutha :)

thanks ill keep workin at with what you said. One more question though, what do you mean when you said " I pushed it all back up to flat "? how do I do that?

In the spirit of speaking for each other.... :D

What he did was EQ the track back to flat. He added some mids and cut some bass and maybe some treble. It's not hard to get the EQ right with a plug in but it will always sound a little processed.

As I stated before turn the bass on the amp down a bit and you should have a really good sounding guitar track. Palm mutes can be difficult to capture on tape. I always get as close as I can going into my recorder and almost never EQ my guitar tracks.
