Suck 'em and see!
I'm thinking of buying a pair of Studio Projects B3s.
First application would be to use one as a vocal mic, 2nd as drum overheads, 3rd as an x/y pair for acoustic guitar.

Is there any other LDCs in the same price range as the B3s I should consider before making the quantum leap from my SM58s?

B3s

Lemon Tree,
There are numerous LDCs in the price range, but none that I am aware of with multi patterns. I have one B3 myself and find myself using it all over the studio for voice , guitar , and drums (mainly snare, since I have just 1 ). The multi pattern feature is really nice for variety. It works great in fig 8 for micing acoustic while singing into a second mic with very little bleed. It is not a boring mic but neither is it completely neutral. But that is a typical characteristic of LDCs.
Having said that, you may consider buying one B3 and 2 small diaphram condensors like the Octavas mc012 (mk012). or the MXL 603s. It would give you a little more variety for a few dollars more. But the B3s ARE a very good starting place.

Why not get one B3 and either two MXL603s or two MC012s? Then you'll have a good vocal mic and three drum mics--two overheads and a room mic. The SDs also sound great on acoustic, and you will even be able to do the mid-side mic config.

The other good LD with multiple patterns here is the CAD M179. Other people have said it's not great on acoustic guitar. I don't primarily record that, so I can't say, but I think it's absolutely fabulous on most acoustic and groups of acoustic/orchestral instruments and other situations...

The B3 is a pretty nice budget multi-pattern mic and I'm sure you'll find many uses for it... however, most of the time I prefer SDC's as drum overheads and on acoustic instruments like guitar.
