I was wanting to paint the rings that hold the heads onto my kick a different color. How would I go about doing this? Could I just use regular spray paint or would I need to use a special kind? I have a sonor 2003 kit.

Grab your Crayolas.... :D

Oh.......... you are looking for a serious answer. :o

Some spray paint can damage and warp the rings. Are the rings metal or wood?

If you're after Black rims - you can buy them.

Generally, you can't "paint" them. It will look really bad because the paint will come off, but you can buy Powdercoating kits to powdercoat them.

I remember Martin Chambers from the Pretenders had a Sonor kit that they painted the metal counterhoops white, and it caused them to warp.

theyre made out of wood. i just wanted to color the kick drum hoops.

Some good sanding and prep work should be all you need for a good paint job.

Okay, yeah - you could paint those with no problems. I thought you were talking about the rims on your toms.

You don't want to use paint because it will chip off. You want to use a colored lacquer, like black lacquer. Drums don't actually have "paint" on them - it's lacquer.

Sand them really well then wipe them down with a "tack" cloth, and you should be good to go.

Lacquer also has an advantage that it dries as a very thin coat (but tough) and evens itself out. You'll get a much cleaner, more professional look. Enamels are too thick. Do several thin coats, letting it dry between sprays.

Awesome. So they sell this "lacquer" in different colors? I just wanted to paint the hoops yellow. Just got a bit of flavor. Yes, I will be eating my kit. Would I use a brush, or do they sell them in spray cans? Sorry, I'm clueless when it comes to handyman work.

I think the best place to get good spray lacquer is an auto parts store. All kinds of colors!
