I recently blew the horn(s) in a couple of old PA speakers,
and am looking to replace them...

My price range is around $400 per monitor, but I can spend up to $600 per cabinet at a very maximum.

i've done some browsing, but was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what sort of ( non-studio) PA i should look at getting?

I love Yamaha loud speakers. They are rough and tough and sound great. Club Series or better. You should be able to get 2 maybe 3 cabs on that budget.

what exactly do you plan to run through them? I would take a look at the JBL MP415 or the MP412 if you plan on using a sub. Perhaps Yorkville ELITE series as well for that budget. The Yamahas are ok but they use generic Eminence speakers not that thats bad. The JBL have a Titanium horn 2418 and the yorkvilles use mostly B&C drivers , both which are a step up from the yamahas for slightly more money + birch plywood box makes a huge differnce. If you can afford them take a look atthe EAW FR159z or FR129z
those are probably the best two way cabs without getting into something real expensive. You also have to determine what type of power you have to run any of these.

Yamaha's have titanium drivers too. I've used a ton of yorkville over the years and I can say undoubtedly that if this guy goes with them, he'll be in the same boat again real soon. Yorkville is horrible compared to yamaha. JBL and EAW can compete with Yamaha but, bang for buck is all about yamaha. That's not to say the yamaha is less quality, just better price.

I agree yamaha makes a good product, however about being in the same situation again, why would you blow up a horn anyway if you are using speakers properly. either feedback or underpowering or grossly overpowering. Any of these speakers are useful given the program material and apllication ie(indoor outdoor, room size, cieling height audience size and so on. As far as yamaha being of the same ilk as an EAW or JBL, maybe JBL MP200 series or JRX but definately not EAW. Yes they are a good buy and durable. I think it has to do more with the efficiency of the cab for volume and power consideration more than brand at this point.

I may not have been the correct useage...It was in fact a co-worker
who wanted to see 'just how load these puppies could go'.

*laughs*

Anyway, i've looked in to the PA's suggested, and I will probably go with the Yamaha's unless something better turns up.

Thankyou everyone for you support and help. I appreciate it greatly. :)

Where do you live? I have some PA speakers for sale that are gently used. Excellent cabs. But they are mains and not monitors. One of your posts said monitors.

Well, I know it is out of your price range, but I thought I would mention it anyways. I am sellign all of our old PA cabs off, but am asking $1000 per cabinet. It is designed as a 3 way system and will absolutely kill ANY of the systems mentioned so far in this thread, but then again it is more expensive. The subs are dual 15" manifold style, and the tops are 2x10" with a 2" long throw horn. The amps are Crest CA18, 12, and 9. I have 12 subs and 8 of the bigger tops for sale as well as three of the amp racks. As a point of reference, I have done indoor shows for Ministry, Mudvayne, Cannibal Corpse, Thrill Kill Cult, Our Lady Peace, Atari's, Bone Thugs'n'Harmony, Hoobastank, Trust Company etc... with just three subs per side and two tops per side in a 2 story 850 seat venue with no problem at all. All drivers are quality RCF and if by chance you bought 4 subs and tops with one amp rack, the case and cabling will come with it.

Once again, I know it is out of your price range, but I though I would mention it since for about double your budget you would be getting at minimum 5 times the system.

Carvin.

I have the bigger version, self-powered (1588a) and a pair of them have really filled up small to medium club/bars with ease.
