I play bass in a n00b band starting out..
(demo:http://www.mikseri.net/jaa)

And somehow, we're playing outdoor gigs at parties and stuff.

Well, to pull that off, we-at least the singer could use a PA of some sort..

(..funnily, our first gig was at a club happening, opening act of three bands, after that we've only played at garages and (next gig) barns :D :D )

I've got 600W bassgear, I'll be heard. The guitarists got halfstacks that'll do... Singer needs to be amplified, how about the drums??..

We're all broke. meaning a small budget, what kinda PA should we get???

Do we need anything else than an amp for the singer??

looks like your a good candidate for SOS type pa...(shit on a stick) look for some kinda 15 with a horn... and a powered mixer... the more power you can afford the better.... although slightly misunderstood the arguement is you blow speakers by underpowering them not over as you might expect....

I have a small PA I use for clubs and various gigs consisting of a Carvin 620, a 6 channel powered mixer and a set of mains that are either 15" speakers and a horn, or 12" speakers and a horn-it depends on the band and the venue. The 12" setup is good for vocals only gigs and the mixer is 150 watts into 4 ohms-it always does very well.
I can set it up in a 1/2 hour easily, and got it all used, so I think I only have about $400 invested and its served me without a problem for 10 years.
It would be a good idea to find a mixer with 2 internal amps and run monitors with one and mains through the other. My Carvin is a mono amped mixer so I carry an extra power amp when monitors are needed.

Would this qualify as SOS???

Behringer :o PA without a mixer (I've got a Mackie 1604 vlz pro..)

-2 Europower 2500w amps
-1 Ultragraph FBQ6200-PRO eq plus sub mono
-1 B 1800 X pro subwoofer (RMS 800w/PEAK 1600w/8ohms)
-2 B1220 all-range speakers (RMS 200w/8ohms)

-900 €

Behringer is crap, but for one gig per year... bang for buck??
