p3 vs duron vs athlon

i am planning to buy new cpu. the price of p3 is very high and that is why i wonder was it good if i took to duron which is much cheaper (among with kx133 with udma100)?
which cpu has the best fpu?

i don't have a clue what fpu is... but i know that duron is comparable to celeron. if you want something like a pentium but cheaper, go for the athlon.
but only a while ago i read that most music-software runs much better with pentiums since it's designed with/for them.
 
I agree with Six. I suggest you go with Athalon for the price. Faster than P-III. The problem is that most software and hardwares for PC are tested for Pentium use. Better check for compatibility with all your hard/software first before you buy your cpu. I am using a slow P-III 550 (I got for $100) with Core2 card which enable me to record 24 trks of audio with effects with out a drop-off. Whatever you decide to get, COMPATIBILITY is the main factor to think about. Good luck.

thanks for reply. now i use k6-2 450 with 128ram and 7200hdd and aardvark 24/96 pro card. it gives me about 26,27 tracks in cubase 501 with some eq and 1 reverb or overdrive. i need fast cpu cause i want to use the same number of tracks but with more send effects and so on.
p3 is really expansive but athlon is no longer produced.
p3 has cheaper mainboards whereas amd needs one for about 190USD (with kx133). i will go with ram now which is very cheap and maybe wait when the prices of p3 mark down.

actually the duron will blow pants off p3

no.. cpu's do not wear pants, just an expression..
the duron is amd's competitor to the celeron pricewise, but performance wise it beats the p3 at almost any speed, it has 192 kb of "on-die" cache(memory that runs the same speed as the cpu, not just 100 or 133 mhz) compared to the p3's 256 kb(which is mostly L2 cache, slower than the duron's L1) and supports a 200 mhz fronside bus(information transfer between cpu and memory) which translates into very snappy performance. you can buy a motherboard for the duron for about 120 to 150us depending on brand (asus, abit and gigabyte all offer outstanding boards) try lookind on pricewatch.com and seeing how much a certain board is direct from a distributer you can buy from there with a credit card and just have a local store put it together if you don't want to. also, you can buy a board for a duron and later stick a thunderbird (newer athlon 384kb of fast cache) in the same motherboard when prices get to your liking. yes, most software and hardware is tested for the imbedded mmx instruction set on intel processors BUT amd's 3d NOW set is almost identicle and actually has more commands than intel's. I've used both brands with several different hard/soft-ware setups and have never had any problems with the exception of tascam's us-428 which is a huge stinky blue turd on either platform. overall, amd is the way to go, for performance and price the athlon slaps the p3. suggestion: either way you go, try to get 133 mhz ram on your new system 256 mb is very sufficient for any audio recording setup and it DOES make a difference (recently experimented with 100 and 133 on a duron 650)
