Hamilton Steele - Overtime

I thought I would pull up this old tune and try and remix it using all the new software and mixing "skills" I have acquired since I wrote it.

It took a few hours and everything had to be rebalanced and eq'd since I'd done so little when I mixed it originally. Funny how you think something sounds ok but when you revisit later it you wonder what you were thinking.

I would appreciate any mix comments from you guys.

ido1957 - Guitars vocals
mjhamil - bass
Poeticintensity - drums

This has been pro mastered and a copy of that is on SC too if you want to compare it. This is not mastered.

I think it really sounds good. Especially the bass guitar/bass drum. I really have a hard time getting a good bass guitar sound on my recordings. The guitars sound good too. Good performances if I had to make a suggestion it would be to brighten up the top end and give it some sizzle. That's alot easier said than done I know. It's hard to brighten up the top end without making it hash and brittle.
That's just a knit pick though man.
Great mix!

Thanks Jimi, I focus more on drums now thanks to Greg and Rami's suggestions. The guy I write with has developed an interesting bass eq setting that has solved a lot of my bass mixing problems. The top end suggestion is good but I had cymbal issues which caused me to undo them. The snare and cymbals are so close in eq for some reason. (Drums are stereo - the individual tracks are not available)

That was rockin', bud. Thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

I think the kick is dangerously close to be being too boomy in the way way lows. The attack is good. The resonate boom is really walking the line almost being way too much. Sounds like it's being compressed pretty hard. Not a bad thing on kick drums, but watch out for all that boom. Sounds like the bouncy boom of around 50hz. Bass, guitars, and vocals all sound great. Bass sounds especially awesome.

Thanks Greg - I'll try and back off the kick low eq or reducing the compressor on it. Or maybe both. Have to play around and see....

Gerry,
The bass is cool.
Drums work well but the kick is powerful/boomy as Greg noted.
The lead sounds sweet.
The rhythm guitars don't seem to have as much bite or maybe aren't as clear as in the old mix.
the old mix seemed more texas, more ZZ Top.
Your vocals - bvox inlcuded are terrific.
This a really cool song - I enjoy it in any form.

Thanks Ray :)
Yes - I haven't figured out what Jan did to the rhythm guitars so I've got less presence there unfortunately. Working on the kick drum tonight when I get home.

I liked this. Overall a very good mix. I thought the bass sound/part was especially cool. Guitars sounded good. I'd only have these nitpicks...

I'd like a tighter kick. Just too heavy in the low end. And probably a bit too loud as well.

I'd personally like a little more crack on the snare attack.

The lead guitar, in some spots, is a bit too far back in the mix.

Thanks TripleM - I'll keep your comments in mind when I work on this one tonight.
