Stand Up Comity
Who's the most overrated guitarist, or the one least deserving of the fame and fortune that their picking and grinning has brought them? Conversely, who's the guitarist that should have been rich and famous, but never got a break because they were too busy focusing on the art?

I would never say because sure as shit, fans of that guy (whoever he/she may be) will leap upon you and declare you brain dead and gay!
;)

All the rich and famous ones are better than me.

Id have to say Chris Whitley was one of the most overlooked, underrated guitarist. That guy was simply amazing.

No one has played longer and learned as little as I have.

I'll go ahead and say it. Eric Clapton. WAAAAAAAAY overrated. Most overrated? I don't know, but in my book, hugely overrated.

Nah. He's the target of a lot of polls and trolls, but it's mostly envy, IMO. There's more to guitar playing than gymnastics. Eric Johnson (for example) may play rings around Clapton in terms of cramming a lot of notes into a short period of time, but I'd much rather listen to Clapton. He has been the lynchpin of an incredible number of seminal works; you don't get the worldwide respect that he commands (and has for decades) unless you've got something goin' on.

Never really cared for Satriani or Via.

Always thought Jeff Beck didn't get the props he deserves.

Its kind of funny but Prince is a damn good guitar player no one ever talks about. I don't own any Prince records but the dude can jam. He may fall under the under rated list.

I don't care for his music but he can definitely play it!

I'd say there are thousands of underrated players. Overrated has to go to Hendrix and Clapton. Hell the Stray Cats dude would kill both of them.

Zappa.....Yes he is/was famous and well respected by others in the music biz, but not a household name.

Underrated/Under appreciated:
Joe Bonamassa.
He's got the chops and the tone.
Check out this clip if you have never heard anything of his.

I've been a HUGE Zappa fan for 30 years. I think he liked it that way. Most of his commercial output was designed to fund and support his other projects. He actively shunned commercial success and often pushed against it. Have to agree the guy was underrated and not just as a guitarist.

One day the world will wake up to visionary talent.

He was a big Carvin fan.
He had a crazy collection of instruments and not just guitars. He would hunt for weeks to find a sound and recorded with many many guitars. I saw him live a few times but of all the guys I would like to have met and worked with that I'll never have the chance it would be him.

As I heard it he came to Carvin via Steve Vai who got his break with Zappa in the first place. The list of now days greats that went through the Mothers is quite an Alumni. Every one from Llowell George to Steve Vai. This
Makes interesting reading. Some very well respected names in there...

Underrated - Roy Buchanan. I've been going bananas over two of his live albums, American Axe: Live in 1974 and Livestock, which I believe is from 1975. For my tastes there has been no one like him before or since.
R.I.P. Roy.
