Well, as the pace of the overdubs slows down a little, I'm finding ways to use my toys better. For quite a while, I've had a PXR4 Pandora that follows me around when I travel. If I have a solid body and some cans with me, it's a practice amp that records, a tuner. Small enough that it is there when you hear that steel band on a street corner. I decided to make it into the centerpiece of a mobile briefcase sized studio. I had never even thought of using it to track anything serious, but my God, the little thing works better than I ever thought!
Here's the experiment.- 2 tracks were recorded, one on acoustic guitar, using an AKG C2000B on the 12th fret, then into a DMP3. The output is line level shifted from +4 to -10 with an EBTECH LLS-2 line level shifter, to keep from clipping the Korg. The input trim was turned to 0, as much gain as possible coming from the DMP3.
Vocals were then done on a second track using the same mic and pre. Just for jollies, I panned the 2 tracks hard left and hard right, to see if there's track bleed. The output went back to the LLS-2 to be transformed into +4, then into 2 stereo channels of the VS1824CD, and burned to CD. Panning was preserved perfectly, and it is very difficult to distinguish between those tracks and ones recorded on the VS studio. Cool beans. I'm pretty sure that in the right acoustic space, and with good outboard gear, the little Pandora can capture commercially usable tracks. The results were amazing. Unfortunately, I can't post them up yet, but we're now just starting to gear up to post mp3's, so I'm planning to post up an attache case demo soon. I can't wait to do the same using the Avalon and some higher end mics.-Richie
