hey, im recording a cheap demo on my tascam 4 track and i need to know about micking the drums. i can borrow mics for bass drum and snare which have been requested in reading and friends, but im not sure what to use for overheads. the shure vocal mic that came with my 4 track makes my toms sound like im hitting buckets but everything else sounds ok (keeping in mind this is to be a cheap 4 track demo). i am also very poor. i have about $10 to my name (im 16). i have quite a few friends in my church sound tech crew and one who owns a studio who can loan me some typical mics. help me out with advice. also, is it possible to rent a small mixer? my four-track has only 4 mic inputs. if so, how and how much? thanks for all your help. laters-jordan

You might want to see if your friend has a couple of AKG 414's. They make several different models of that mic but any should be fine for what you are doing. If posible try to rent a Mackie 1604. A mixer like this will allow you to "premix" all your drums into two tracks. Expect to pay about $50/day for the mixer and $20/day per mic. You must have a Guitar Center near you, they can either rent to you or put you in touch with a rental company close by.

One of the biggest companies I know of to rent from is called Design FX. The are located in LA http://www.dfxaudio.com - 800.441.4415. They can give you a good idea of what it should cost to rent something.
good luck,

I would say try to borrow any mic that works on a super-cardiod pattern (really tight pick-up pattern). they will
pick up toms cymbals everything, better than just a dynamic would, for a mixer, that's a tough one.
