What's the 'standard', if there is one, for stereo pair overheads while recording drums; compression or no compression? The mic's are Octava mk012's.

I'm not sure if there is a standard, but I would take the mics and put them in an X-Y pattern (capsules 90 degrees to each other), at least 2.5 feet above the highest cymbal. X-Y will get you good mono compatibility with little or no phase cancellation. If they are too close to the cymbals they often get this too thick clanky sound that I'm not too fond of. Too far away though and there isn't enough meat from the toms and snare. Compression can be done, but it's probably most safe during mixdown only. If you must compress during recording, play it safe and use a slow attack, relatively fast release, low ratio, and just a little gain reduction. Also, if you don't already, place some fiberglass absorption above your drums. It will get rid of some nasty reflections from your ceiling, in effect "raising" your ceiling height. 703 works best, but even inexpensive R-11 will do fine for low mid to higher frequencies.
