I am planning on starting a solo recording project in a week or so. I have some decent mics for drums. Here is my list:

Snare: Audix D3
Rack Tom: Audix D2
Floor Tom: Shure Beta 58
Bass Drum: Shure Beta 52

I don't have any overhead mics, though. What are some budget overheads that can sound good. Also, where should I put them. My setup consists of 2 crash cymbals on each side of the bass drum, a ride just above the bass drum a little towards the right, and a china way on the right hand side. I am thinking of micing my ride seperately as well to get a more focused sound. I'm not too worried about hi-hats. Also, how is my mic selection for the kit? I am putting the mics inside the drums to record, and I think I've gotten pretty decent results. Any info would be great! Thanks.

Looks like your mics are pretty good. I've never used the Audix mics, but I have recently recorded with the Beta52 and I really like it! I have an ATM25 that we stuck on the floor tom and then SM57s on the snare, two toms, and the kick beater. I used MXL603s for the overheads in an XY configuration.

The 603s seem to be a favorite around here for drum overheads (among other things). I don't have experience with other drum overheads but I've been really happy with the results I'm getting with the 603s.

Cheers!

Thanks guys. I have heard of the 603s and I might possibly pick some up. A guy who is in the band I currently play in has some condensers that I may be able to use as overheads instead of buying my own. I'm not sure what kind of mics they are, though. I think they are similar to an MXL-type mic, but I dont think they are MXLs.

mxl603's are a god choice for buget mics but i suggest you svae up some more green and either get a stereo pair of akg c1000 or c2000 or mabea pair of at 3035 would do but if you really cant i suggest a pair of behringer b1's they were my first and i loved em to death my opinion better than 603's
peace

Mc-012's from Oktava are my mic of choice for overheads. I also have the MXL603s mics and they are a little too bright in my opinion. Depends on the sound you are going for.
