hi there
i currently have 2 overheads which are picking up a ride splash and crash wich are all to the left of my kit. thren i have my hihat to the right. is it better to have my overheads in xy configuartion just to pick up everything, or would i benefit from using one overhead for the ride/splash/crash region, and have the other overhead focusing more on the hihat and then panning them accordingly? would this create a mroe unnatural sound or would my overall mix benefit from this? thanks

steve

If you have the chance, try it both ways. Spaced overheads and x-y configurations are both used. With spaced configuration, you'll have to watch out for potential phasing issues, and you may need to play with the position a bit to get a sound you're happy with. I've always arranged overheads in an x-y configuration and been happy with the results.

I am no pro, but I have heard that having a dedicated mic for the hit-hat helps to control the mix better. to avoid phasing issues with the snare, aim the hi hat mic away from the snare completely to avoid any conflict. As far as overhead mics, I would be more drawn to a dedicated side for your ride,crash....., but doing this in an xy fashion or cross fading can also give you more dynamics to work with when you get to the editing and mixing process. I hope this helps. --- dizzi devereux
