When micing acoustic instrument with one mic in front and one over the shoulder, is the 3:1 rule critical for phase issues? Also, how do most of you end up panning this type of setup? or do you? Maybe just mix one in with the other for more or less of that particular flavor? BTW, this is a solo application. No concern about how it sits in a mix, etc.

Much thanks in advance!

No, 3-1 doesn't need to be strictly followed here. Phase probably isn't going to be important since most likely you will be panning the two mics left/right in the mix. It could potentially be an issue if you are mixing both center or mixing down for mono (i.e. AM radio broadcast).

When I do over the shoulder, I place the mic where it sounds best. I move it around, sometimes left ear, sometimes right. I try and strike a nice balance with the other mic in front. Pan to taste...

The only problems I have had is with headphone bleed into the mic near the ear. Usually taken care of by lowering the volume. If you are solo, then that should not be an issue.

Good point - I've used this mic set up before and had phase problems, but never thought about panning left and right. I'll try it next time.
