I'm a pretty smart guy. You won't think so after my questions. I have a great Roland VS2480.
Q1: What are the steps to overdub on this machine. I want to record, say, 2 tracks live then record all additional tracks onto the recorded tracks one at a time. Since it is just me and one other guy we are trying to do what us old guys did easily with the analog reel to reels. So with 2 tracks recorded I want to play back those two tracks while adding a lead guitar, then a keyboard, drums, vocals, etc. How do I do this?

Then once recorded is the process of a mix down but I'll save that for another time.

Thanks so much in advance.

There's a Roland forum down below if you don't get any love up here...

I don't use that machine but did use a Yamaha AW4416 for a decade. On that it was all about routing, and not getting your input numbers confused with your track numbers. For instance, I'd record two tracks via inputs 1 & 2 to tracks 1 & 2. Then, I'd reroute inputs 1 and 2 to tracks 3 & 4 and record tracks 3 and 4 whilst tracks 1 & 2 were playing.

To do this you needed to understand the routing - how to have the recorded tracks 1 & 2 play on the ST (stereo) buss whilst using the input busses for the inputs. And each time you added more tracks you had to assign those you'd just recorded back to the ST buss afterwards, so after you've done 3 & 4, you reassign them back to ST, and assign inputs 1 & 2 to tracks 5 & 6. Etcetera... Rinse and repeat.

The Roland's probably similar and that's probably where you're getting tied up - you haven't given any details of what you actually are doing, so it's hard to say. And if in doubt, hunt down the manual...it should all be in there.

Good luck.
