Outboard pre's into DAW

I've long been running my outboard channel strips (Focusrite TwinTrak Pro, Voicemaster Pro and ART TubePAC) into the XLR inputs of my Roland VS-1680 with great results. With the 1680's input gain set at zero, I was under the impression the preamp would be bypassed altogether. Lately, I've been getting a lot of graininess in the signal which I can only seem to rectify by turning the 1680's gain up ever-so-slightly, which makes me think: a) there's gunk in the pots/preamp circuit; b) having the gain at nil doesn't bypass the onboard preamp entirely; and c) there is perhaps a better way for me to get the signal into the DAW. I realise there are A/D converters available for the Focusrites which are no doubt better than those in the 1680 but, other than that, is there a smarter way to record which won't destroy the pristine signal as soon as it hits the Roland's crappy pre?

Sorry for rambling, any help will be greatly appreciated.

I looked at the Vs and it seems to me that the only option for by-passing
the onboard pres would be the digital in.Wonder why they did'nt put I/O's
on that thing? Is there an option for adding them?

There are digital ins and outs but seemingly no analogue ins which bypass the preamp stage. Anyone got any ideas that don't involve me buying an external A/D converter?

Sounds lie the pots might be dirty. I record the same with my 2400 (and did with my 1880). If it's that bad, you can always use a noise suppressor from on eof the effects cards.

Does it do it on both channels or just one?
