outboard de-esser vs de-esser plugins

thoughts on outboard de-esser vs plugin de-esser. Would you prefer to track with a de-esser, or just mix with a plugin, or use an outboard de-esser to run vocals through and mix. Just wanting people opinions and which they prefer, and you think an outboard would sound better than a plugin.
 
I don't have an opinion on whether outboard is better than plug-in (which outboard??? which plug-in????).

But, I can't see why I'd ever use it while tracking. If you need a de-esser while tracking, then you should take care of the ess-ing in the first place so that you don't need a de-esser.

I see de-essers more as a "frist-aid" tool, not something that you automatically want to record with. I'd only use one to fix bad tracking, which is why I almost never need one. I make sure that I get as good a sound at tracking as possible, rather than hope to fix a shitty recording in the mix.

But that's just me.:)
 
I feel ya. Its become habit for me to automatically though a de-esser plugin on a vocal track when I start mixing it. (I use the massey de-esser) Come to think of it I never listen to the vocal and see if it needs de-essing. I put it right on and go from there. Like I said....habit

If I am given a Track thaT hasssss excessssss ssssibelensssse in iT, and I am digiTally mixsssing in the boxsss, I ssssee no need To go outboard just to de-esssss; a nicsse MBSssee or de-essssser plug will do jusssssT fine. BuT the key issss To Try and geT the sssssssesssss from ssssshowing up in the recording to begin wiTh thru proper mic Technique..

And MORE of that.

That said - I had a $7k Weiss in here and tested it out against SpitFish and I actually preferred SpitFish.
 
yes, spitfish is one of the best & freeware. the UAD de-esser is also very nice.
