So I think I'll be needing a new pinch roller for a Otari MX-5050 MkIII-8, and I'm thinking of terry's site. But I'm a little confused, do I need the one with the 6 little ridges, or the smooth one? Here's the picture:

just "find" for 5050

thanks!!

The one with the ridges is most likely a tape guide to be used left of the tape path, I'm almost positive you'll want the smooth one, I've never seen a ribbed pinch roller. Good Luck!

The ribbed thing is probably the tach roller, if the Otari is anything like the Tascams.

hmmmmm...... I wonder if it's possible to make my own pinch roller?

Only 40 bucks???

So, this guy will rebuild any pinch roller up to like, 4 inches for only 35 bucks???

I'm reading the order form, and that's what it's saying.

WOW. that sure beats JRF Magnetic's 100 dollar price tag for one of those bad boys.

The reason I ask is because I am in the process of possibly selling my Otari MX5050 MKIII 1/2" 8. So, I go over to test it out and try to recalibrate it, and clean it up before showing it to the guy this weekend, and I cleaned the pinch roller pretty good before I loaded any tape on it. (Using pinch roller cleaner, of course.) But, as I used it, the surface of the roller got kinda.......sticky. and I noticed a coule of tiny cracks along the edge of the pinch roller. So, I took a paper towel, and the outer stickyness seemed to just kinda rub off and clean itself up pretty well. Once it was dry enough and smooth, and clean enough to be used, I put it back on, crossing my fingers.

I ran a calibration tape through to get some levels, and not but 1 second into it, the tape stuck itself ALL THE WAY AROUND THE F-IN PINCH ROLLER. I pulled the tape off of the pinch roller, and the oxide sheared off right with it. I'm POSITIVE it's not a sticky cal tape. Just a bad pinch roller. The cal tape is only a year old, and it's been well kept, so. Luckily, this happened at the tail end of the tape, the unimportant, 30ips section. (WHEW!)

Anyway, I need a new pinch roller before I can hope to sell the thing. The guy I'm selling it to owns a professional recording studio, but he himself has nillo analog experience. He wants to buy it so he can play around with it and teach himself some analog technique, and maybe use it to track some drums every now and then to slam the tape some. So, I want to make sure he gets a good start with this machine, because up til now, it's been real good to me.

yeah, he's legit and very good and fast. Turnaround time was less than a week for me! He's very communicative, and does a absolutely perfect job. I've had him rerubber my mx5050 mkIII roller, and everything was fine, and plan to do it again for another 5050 I have.

I have an extra remote control I might be willing to part with,if you want it.

I am also in the MX-5050 mkIII club and I'm starting to wonder about my pinch roller. I have to get some rubber cleaner before I get too serious about putting tape on there but I'm wondering if my roller to the left of the transport is ok. Mine currently looks like the rust-colored ridged roller in the picture on the left within the link you posted. Is that ok or should this part be rubber as well as the pinch roller to the right of the transport?
