What's ORTF configuration? Organic response, tremendous finesse? Oranges really taste fruity?

ortf is an acronym for a french broadcasting organization, and designates a method they devised for stereo recording using a pair of matched microphones. typically, the two mics are positioned in a slightly spaced XY configuration and pointed outward at an angle of 105 degrees (capsules are usually about 8-10" apart). shoeps actually makes a special ortf stereo mic that is extremely good. i prefer ortf even over the blumlein arrangement for most small and medium sized ensembles of live music.

a bit more - though the blumlein is a more accurate and more mono-compatible setup, i have found i like the more open image spread you can get from ortf. with blumlein, each instrument is highly localized in the soundfield, which classical purists seem to prefer. with ortf, the localization is more diffused and offers a broader image for the individual instruments - this is the way that the highly-respected classical label, DELOS, records many of its artists.

Cheers, volunteers. Thanks for the link, rec eng - I'll do my homework. And jnorman - you're fond of Delos material, yes? I went through my classical CDs and there's nothing there on Delos. You mentioned an album of harp music on another thread - anything else you particularly like on that label?
