I would like to know all of your opinions of what order rack effects should be bought. This list includes pre-amps, compressors, equalizers, reverb, and anything else that you may deem important. Thank you for your input.

A good front-end (ie, mics, pres) and monitoring chain should be the top priority..... after that, you can worry about other outboard gear........

The pre(s) always come first. What FX, EQ, or compression you use depends on the style of music, the room, artistic taste, etc. The pre is your mic's gate to the recording medium, and is critical. Without a pre, you can't record anything, so the other boxes are irrelevent.
The features of the pre(s) also affect your choices for additional units. If the pre has EQ or compression that you like, that may affect your next choice. If you are an Irish folk singer, FX/Reverb is next. If you are a rapper, the compressor is next. If you are a classical musician, EQ is next.-Richie

*psst* That's the "monitoring chain" I was talking about!!! ;)

Opps, I read right over that. Next time use pictures. (makes sure there color too) hehe

yeah, this is how i did it:

computer - soundcard - monitors - mixing desc - compressor/preamp/gate

thats my basic setup, and then come my mics, software,
i only have dynamic processing gear in my racks...nothing else,
maybe its time to start looking out for a real decent reverb or delay unit,
but i donno....i can always do that with software plugins, but i just didn't find One plugin that really kicks ass for reverb or delay...

i keep one rule in mind : make sure you recorded it REAL clean,
and afterwards you can always fuck up the sound :)

rrrrr...don't we all love fucking up sounds...thats why a PC is so much fun
