I am thinking of buying a half stack but I dont know the differences between the marshall JCM800, Dual Rectifier, and an Orange. I play a lest paul and telecaster. Does anyone know if one amp is better than the other?

Have you played any of those amps? They are different, and we all have different tastes.

I'd get the Orange too, but good luck finding them anywhere. When you do, they are $$.

What style of music do you play?

All the amps you listed are good. Your decision will come down to the tone you are seeking. Try each one.

Orange, Marshall or Boogie?

I suggest you take a look at the ultimate guitar amp "MAD PROFESSOR"

This new tube amp is a monster! It features three gain structure options, extensive tone control network, 40 watts of (clean) output power, series effects loop with level options, selectable level boost at foot switch control with a front panel knob to set desired boost.

The amp is LOUD but has also great tone at club-levels thanks to special "POWERSUCK" option..
You'll have a great consistent tone at any volume whether you're practicing in your bedroom, or cutting a solo on a livegigg !

Listen to the sound examples at www.custom-sounds.com/madprof_mp3.htm

Me myself have an old Line6-AX212... =(
But I'm trying to get $$$$ to buy "the mad one" =)

Some kind of spam Hard2Hear !???! Ha ha ha.. Yeaa, Right...

At least 10-15 people a day would run and buy the amp, for a long time to come..?!.. f--kn moron! I'm just try to inform RJandthefull, that there is more than Marshall and Orange out there!

You've presumably some kind of sponsorship... Right? Speaking about Mr. CLIFFORD COOPER. ;)
(Who's Mr. Cooper?! = The founder of Orange Amplifiers!)

Don't know anything about Orange.

I've got a JCM 800 2203. This is an excellent amp but it is not very versatile. It sounded like crap until I got it modified. I don't know what the mod was and I've lost touch with the tech so I can't tell you. But before the mod the high end was very "gritty" or "grainy" sounding. Lots of people mod these things. It also doesn't sound good until you crank it, so if you're not playing loud you might want an attenuator. It works nicely with a pedal for leads.

I've got a boogie dc-3 which will get just about any kind of sound pretty well. It does everything pretty well, but nothing great. The boogies I've played are much more pre amp oriented where the Marshall can get better power amp distortion. I've never even used a pedal with my boogie. No need to. Boogies seem to sound better at lower volumes than Marshalls.

Hope that helps.

boy you took that toooooooo personally.
Only one conclusion.

SPAM-ER!

If that is even a word......

(the only thing missing from the spec list was the tube types)

The fact is that when I posted that, your personal web link was to the same website you refrenced there. Shortly after I posted it, I noticed your web link was gone from your profile. Apparently you quickly changed it to not look like a spammer.

By the way, Orange amps are now made by Matamp, who also makes their own "Green" series of Matamps which are pretty much identical to the Orange amps.

I don't know what kinda music you play, or anything other than you have 3 choices.

I have a hotrodded Marshall, a 2205 model with Groove tubes, the El34's got swapped out for 6550's. Kinda of add a few hundred to the cost of the amp. Its pretty versitile, channel switching, reverb, line out and effects loop.

Ive played alot of amps, and its definitely something you should do. Alot of Marshalls suck to me, but some that don't. Each company has slight variations in tone depending on when it was made. There are Soldano amps and Randall amp, I like the Randalls and a couple of the older Crate amps for certain things. I had a Dean Markley for clean stuff that worked well. Try em out, see what tickles your ears, ya might end up with something different.

SoMm

I will admit that that Mad amp looks cool but it is really sad that he even lied in his post.

"But I'm trying to get $$$$ to buy "the mad one" =)"

Shit, make yourself one. HAHAHAHAAHahaahahahaha....!!!!!!
Damn I am funny.

Oh ya....you will sell more amps with better sales skills.

Rule #1

-Try to avoid calling people "f--kn moron!"

Its just one of those.....mmm......pushing when the sign says pull type things.

As for this post....go to a store and try out the amps you want and you might stumble on your own sound.

Just curious:

What kind of sounds can you get from an "Orange"? Is there any player that uses them or endorses them?

thanks for the advice. from what i hear the marshalls have alot more high end and the boogies have more of a low end. I have yet to play through an orange but i know alot of bands that use them and they seem to sound very nice. One band uses an orange head through a marshall cab and his guitar screams even with little gain. Hmmm thanks for the help.

If you are gonna check out these amps look into HIWATTS.. Kinda like a Orange with a little more thump..

Don

If you ever want to crank your amp with the power tubes you should look at something more around 20 watts rather than a 100 watt half stack. I know they look cool, but they sound like garbage if you play clubs.

Which HIWATT? I saw that there are two companies with the trademark. One in the UK that claims to replicate the original Hiwatt design at http://www.hiwatt.co.uk and the one in the states http://www.hiwatt.com which is run by the Fernandez company.

Obviously they are two companies with the same name. But what about the quality of both companies? Anyone know?

Hey Dave,Very confusing!I was refuring to the originals...However I didn't know someone else was makeing the "same" amp!I would think the British company would be the one..Just guessing

If you look for it, you can see Jimmy Page using one in song remains the same.
