I'm a poor student on an almost non-existant budget. I've been running my electric guitar through a mixer (temporarily donated) and straight into my computer (via EMU 0404). Needless to say, with no preamp, my guitar sounds like poop. I assume that this is because I am preampless. I've been wondering if I bought a super-cheap amp (enter: orange crush 10w), would I get a much better sound when I record? Thanks,

The short answer is yes. Any amp would be a lot better than a mixer. If you're really broke, and handy with electronics you can make one of thoose cigarette pack amps.

But if you have the buy for the orange crush, I say buy it.

Well I just went to the local guitar store, played one, loved it, and bought it. I came home and immediately plugged my guitar in, and plugged the amp into the mixer through the phones port. I strummed a chord... nothing. I turned up the volume on the guitar, amp, mixer, and speakers way up, and barely got any sound. I assumed that the phones port was broken, so I took my Grado SR-60 headphones and plugged them into the phone port and was blasted by noise. What's the deal here?

If you are using a mono cable with a stereo headphone jack then that would explain it.

Try connecting a microphone (any for now) to the mixer, then putting that in front of the amp's speaker. You'll probably like the results much better then trying to connect the amp into the mixer.

Hear Orange Crush 10 in action

Hi all:

If anyone's interested, you can hear an Orange Crush 10 used on a recording.

Go to:
www.nicolestunes.com
Choose
'Albums', Sgt Crossblood & the Armor Piercing Rounds
Click song:
"The Spirit"

You'll hear an Orange Crush 10 kicking off the rhythm chord-riff in your left speaker, and then of course being played throughout rest of song. The best part is you can hear it all by it's lonesome at the beginning of the song to know what it really sounds like. Guitar used was a Standard American Tele, miked w/57 into VF16EX console direct to hard drive.

This might give you an idea of one of the sounds it's capable of, i.e., mild overdrive w/cleanish top. I personally dig it for certain sounds and tracks.

Best to you.
