When I hit ctrl+alt+delete, this is what I get:
Data Lifeguard Agent
Explorer
Blackice
Realplay
Systray
Aticwd32
Osa
Easykey
Remind32
Findfast
msmsgs
Aoltray

Which of these background programs can I turn off and how do I turn them back on when I'm done with my sequencer?

Hi joedirt,

For shutting off startup programs, do the following:
start/run...type msconfig and press enter...then
click the startup tab....then unclick any unnessary
programs. Systray needs to be there..do not uncheck
that one. When you finish, click ok and the computer
will ask to reboot. When you want to programs to
load use msconfig and put a check beside the programs
you want to load at boot up time.

Hope this helps!

Yes, Explorer and Systray are all you need (or should have) running while doing audio.

There's another great utility out there called "End It All" from http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/enditall.htm that will shut down all the programs running but protect the ones you want to stay up. You can leave all your stuff running but hit this before you start playing with audio. GREAT freeware utility that I feel is a must-have.

quickest way is to log off and log on again. If you'd rather restart quickly, press [Shift] while restarting (98/98SE). This will restart only windoze.

Is it possible to set up a User for doing music so that when you log on as that user it only loads Explorer and Systray? If so how?

Also note that some of these items may be in your startup group in the Windows program group. Findfast is one of these and can and should be deleted from the startup group. It is a giant resource hog.

In Win2k, through the Services snap-in. I tried it once, but didn't work out right.

98/98SE, AFAIK, not completely possible. There are services that start up thru registry, which aren't possible to turn off. All startup group items can be switched off, though, by just deleting them.
