Optimal spacing between walls?

What's the optimal air space to leave between double walls? I want to preserve as much space in my room as possible, but soundproofing is of major importance. I've been planning on 1 inch of space, but I'm curious if that's enough.

it also seems un-intuitive to leave air space rather than some sort of insulation material. It's true, tho, right? that empty air space is a good insulator?
 
I think the greater the air space, the greater the sound isolation. THus, you are always choosing your compromise point between isolation and space sacrificed. That's why things like RC are so popular- they give a lot of isolation without eating up a lot of floor space.

Most folks will tell you 6" is pretty nice space, but 1" may not buy you much...
 
jonothon - any space will help. As you are short of space have you considered using my *back-to-front* wall construction?? where the drywall is on the outside not the inside. This allows you to use the stud cavity for treatment. Check out the wall construction of LEFT BANK
