I'm about to venture into transferring recordings from my Fostex DMT8vl onto to my pc for mixing. I have transferred via analog, but I'm wondering if it's possible to dump the tracks onto my pc via the optical send port out of the back of the unit?
I realize that it's probably a more complicated answer than just yes or no, but I would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction. Thanks,

you'll need an audio interface that has an optical connection on it and software that is compatible with the interface

The optical In and Out of the Fostex are SPDIF. That means you would only be able to transfer one stereo or two mono tracks at a time.
Also .... yes you would need a soundcard that offers SPDIF I/O.
It wouldn't necessarily need to be optical I/O though, as many soundcard that offer SPDIF use coaxial RCA I/O.
In the event that coaxial RCA I/O is what you end up with, you can always get a converter. Just be sure to use coaxial SPDIF cables, not regular RCA cables.
