...
I worked on a song last night with a fella.
Originally it was to be a live recording dressed with a little reverb.
One way or other there's now a subtle bass and percussion track.

One of us wants to go raw and one of us wants the little extras.
I was hoping someone here could shed some light?

There's no difference until about 1:00 but it's only 2:50 long anyway.

Thanks in advance. Really appreciating the feedback around here lately.

Tough call man. I did notice on both versions there's a point where it sounds like he slaps the body of the guitar twice in row (about 20% into the song - it opened with a player with no clock on it, so I can't give a time stamp - sorry) and that was a little harsh. He does it later on and it sounds fine - quieter.

Anyway, I listened to version A first and thought, "this doesn't need anything. It's fine as is".

Then, I listened to version B, and when I first heard the bass slide in during a mellow part, I thought "that isn't really necessary", but then when he got to some of more rowdy bits a little later, I thought the additions really did add a lot. I liked the enhanced chugging feeling of those parts.

So, I guess my pick is version B, but wait until a little later at the start of a more rousing section to bring the additions in for additional impact. I probably don't know what I'm talking about though...:p

Interesting. Thanks heat!

I thought it would be a yay or nay, but you found some middle ground. :p
Funny because I totally dig the little bass slide but I wasn't sure about the pounding rhythm.

Hi Steen. I really like both versions. I do like the bottom end that the bass adds but I think I lean more towards version A. The tune sounds like it's meant to be played by a singer with just his acoustic. As much as I like what the bass adds, I think the acoustic alone fits the song better. Just my two cents.

song b is really cool but I'm partial to a. A just has a better vibe and is a little louder. I don't think it needs the bass.

Steen,

I've noticed such a little difference it doesn't really matter. Go with whatever makes the client happy. I'm inclined to B but A is so similar and awesome that I'll be happy to take it.

Oh wow, really?
I know the difference are subtle enough but I thought the percussion and bass during the built up bits really added something.
Hmm..I'm none the wiser, lol.

Thanks for the comments though; Overall they're fairly neutral in that no one seems to hate anything in particular.

I was originally inclined to keep it raw and the forum tendency seems to lean that way.
Cheers for the comments.

That's some deep bass. I'm not really into the song so I don't really have a preference, but I guess if I were stranded on a desert island and these two versions were all I had to listen to for the rest of my short life before the vultures pick my corpse clean and the sand crabs drag my remains to their final salty resting place, I'd want B.

Jesus Greg; I'm sure if that happened we'd get you a punk compilation somehow!
Thanks for the comment.

If there's nothing else to be done, I think version A is better - cleaner mix.

If you can still tweak it, I think some of the bass parts in version B can definitely be mixed in better - it's a bit overwhelming at times. I can definitely see the value of adding in some of these extra sounds, I just think it can be smoother.

If the bass came in sooner and it was a little less heavy, I'd like B better. It was so deep and rumbly, it got a little distracting in spots. But the general idea and part were fine.

I'm noticing a few artifacts. Some hiss and background noise real quick right at the beginning. He's hitting the guitar body in a couple of spots. There was one word (can't remember where) where he kind of spit it out a bit.

Fair enough. A few people have said the bass is very low/deep. Maybe my monitors aren't revealing that.
I'll take a look. (edit: Just rolled off some extreme lows and dropped the bass volume a touch.)
I think the fact that it's panned almost hard left might be putting some people off though. Maybe not.
Thanks.

Yeah, he doesn't care. :p
I think he kinda wishes it was 196*/1970*.
It's all part of the performance, man. ;)
