I borrowed an at3035 to see how it does as an overhead. My plan is to do a classic triangle micing scheme (2 OHs and 1 kick). This recording was made by using a single at3035, using a titch of reverb and a little boost in the low end. No other mics were used.

Standard disclaimer: I am a guitar player who is delving into the drums b/c I can't find a drummer

Any feedback would be appreciated.

P.S. Sorry this is crossposted in the mic forum, but I couldn't figure out how to activate the songs for listening on nowhereradio until a few hours ago.

The point being if you have a lot of bleeding from the Cymbals during mixing,or Mastering,(becouse everything is together in the overhead),you are in big trouble...Dr. Zaragemca.

Depending on the drummer and the cymbals and room and a mic, it's possible to get pretty well balanced one mic mono recordings.
Usually the mic should be placed in the front of the kit 1-2 meters (3-6 ft) away ,on the height of the top of bassdrum or somewhat higher. This gives you better bassdrum etc and the cymbals aren't conquering the whole mix.

"lo-fi" techniques are always fun to experiment and they teach you a lot.

Hey, I'm impressed!! I usually only listen to the first verse and a chorus unless I really like the song. I got that one the whole way through.

I think that sound worked pretty well with the song. Sounded like a 60's drum recording with a little better quality. You seem to have a good knowledge of how the kit should be tuned and because your the songwriter, you understand how phrasing should be done. Time is great. (falls apart a little at the end, but hey, geetar right?) All in all it sounds great.

Can you image how good it will sound with a few more mics? Your engineering skills got a nice balance with one mic, it should sound excellent with a few more.

(guttapercha! Balata! ...I prefer urethane with a surlyn mantle. the cover doesn't shred as bad. same spin rates.)
