i recently aquired the studiomaster 16-4-2 desk and ive just been mixing this 1 track on it, totally loving mixing in the analogue realm.

basic mix rundown:
compression is done in Logic Pro Studio 8
some reverb in logic
everything sent out to desk
eq on desk and further reverb added on aux from my line6 M13 guitar pedal (was just curious to hear it, as i think the reverbs on it actually are a little too good!)
mastered on the way back into the computer. just a compressor, x-noise (theres a crazy noise tone that is on the desk) then finally a limiter.

Compressors: focusrite/t-racks
reverb: focusrite/line6

automation is all done live on the desk (which feels amazing!!)

SO, opinions please. what do you think. its the track called 'mixed on a 16-4-2' or something like that

The sound is pretty good, when you say the automation is "live" what do you mean? Does that board have automated faders?

Sounds to me like this is lacking air and sheen.

The performance is good, tracking sounds good. But the whole mix seems a dull and lacking life.

Maybe a by-product of noise reduction?

Also, I am searching for the bass....the low end is there just not clearly defined, IMHO.

Good song.

By live automation are you meaning riding the faders?

yeah. i had various parts where i change the panning and adjust the reverb, etc. i did it in realtime on the desk.

i see what you mean about it sounding quite dull. the bass was tracked on di and doesnt sound great as it is. its the best i can do with it as it is i think. i think i will adjust the EQ at the output stage to add a bit of sheen. the noise reduction didnt change the sound of the mix or anything.

this is a demo as far as we are concerned as a band. we will re-record this in the near future.

Cool. I was watching a Pink Floyd video where DG was talking about how back in the day, the mix was just as important of a performance as the tracking. Everyone gathered around the board with their specific job on the faders and knobs. Kind of sad to think of those days being long gone.

IMO, you can't have NR without changing the sound of the mix....anytime you take something away(even the bad stuff) you change the sound somehow.

Good demo. Have fun mixing analogue style.

I like the song!

Nice guitar sound too. The vocals are just at the right volume (I like them low).

It's true that it's lacking a bit of low end. You can't quite feel the kick and bass. That's about the only problem.

Hard. The harmonies sound real nice.

Reminds me of Green Day for some reason. The singers voice I think.

All good, nice job.

Nice work again sku - all the parts of the mix are blurred together, but they really suit the style. I like it as is.

Hi, I think the backing is tight, full and well-performed, but the vocal sounds under-performed if you know what I mean - almost conversational. Is that how your singer sings with your band when you play live? I would put some work into getting some venom and life into the singing, in order to match the power and aggressiveness of the instrumentation. I'd be proud of the dense, weighty sound on the rest of the track, though.

thanks for the comments. bubba po, i am the vocalist/songwriter/guitarist of the band. i actually sang the vocals on that track like that as i was demoing them late at night and didnt wish to wake anyone, but i actually think it really suits the style. it is 'controversial' in a way, and i think it really suits. if you check out our other stuff on the soundcloud page though, you will notice more shouty/agressive vocal work.

ive actually taken some of these comments into consideration and have carried on mixing the track. i am MUCH happier with the newer version, it definitly is punchier and bassy-er. i will post it and let you know when its up.

thats the only problem with mixing analogue. i really am gunna have to complete the mix of this track before i move onto any other bits i wanted to work on through my desk. sucks a bit, but its worth the bonus sonic qualities. when i am done with mixing and mastering to where i am mega happy, i will upload my mix version from the desk and the version mixed directly in logic pro. i would be interested to see if you can tell the difference!

thanks again everyone, keep the comments coming

Good mix IMHO - the instruments and vocals are well separated and I can discern everything. Is that live drums? Good rockin' tune.
Nameless 2 is another great tune - actually bigger favorite song-wise - but equally well mixed.

great song & sounds quite good. i would feature vox a bit more. i would EQ the guitars slightly less "heavy" & more "cool". i like the drum sound.

ah, the drum sound, that would be my brother's (hes the drummer) black beauty snare drum. beauty she is!

Nameless 2 sounds pretty awesome brother! Reminds me (the vocals) of Kurt Cobain when Nirvana do their harder stuff. Kick ass tune man.
