I currently have a Presonus Firebox. I use an ibook G4 with Logic 7. Next year I plan on upgrading my equipment to better "rack mount" gear (pre amps, etc). I'm considering a Fireface 800 along with other various preamps. To be honest...I'm quite hapy with my Presonus Firebox. It has yet failed me. I may upgrade to a Firepod when I go to rack gear. My question is...I want to buy a lower priced Preamp (2 channel) to use before I start making major purchases next year. I was told (since for now I only record 1 track at a time) i would be fine keeping the Firebox...and then concentrate on better pre's. I use a Presonus TubePre as a DI for guitar/bass (very good sounding..I might add). I like the "piano" sound of my Yamaha keyboard "stage" keyboard. Since the signal is so low..I have to pipe it thrugh the actual mic inputs of the Firebox. It sounds fine. For acoustic guitar, however, the Presonus pre's sound a bit harsh. I was told the DMP3 is a great pre for the money. I also like what I've read about the RNP by FMR. Is the FMR worth the extra $300? Is the DMP3 worth the extra $150 over the presonus Firebox pres? If the RNP is no major upgrade over the DMP3..I'll save the cash and go with the DMP3. One person told me that he kept his DMP3 after getting much more expensive gear (Chandler) because it's perfect for field recording. He'll use the University musicians from time to time and the DMP3 is great at capturing a small string section with his laptop gear in the rehearsal hall. Opinions please.
