Opinions on this guitar tone?

Hates Raymond
I wanted some opinions on the guitar tone I have dialed in for a band I am recording. This is a clip of a rough mix of the drums, bass and guitar that I put together just to make some judgements on the guitar tone.
Any opinions?

Just had a listen on a headset at work, but will have another listen on my system when I get home.

Sounds pretty good to me, I'd be happy with it. Maybe could do with being a teensy bit fuller but probably not. Like I say I was listening on a pc headset at the time, so my answer might be totally different when I listen at home. I will say tho that the palm mutes were something I picked up on. In the sense that seemed to have a perfect crunch quality to them, and from that respect I wouldn't change a thing. This would be the sort of sound I generally go for :) Nice job :)

Oh one thing. The link you posted has a mini typo in it, its actually

:D :D :D

i think it sounds really great. great tone, great 'in your face' feel in the mix. im looking for a tone and feel similar to that myself, but im not finding it. if you dont mind me asking, what did you use/do to get it?

Thanks for the listen, and for catching my typo! I'm mildly retarded.

It's a 5150 II with a MXR Wylde Overdrive in front for a clean boost, into a Marshall cab with a single SM57 in front, about an inch off the grille and 2 inches out of center.
I used an M-Audio Tampa preamp, and I recorded 2 tracks on the left side and 2 tracks on the right.

EQ wise, I did a cut of around 5 or 6 db at 400 hz for some low end build up but no other processing.

Thanks for listening!

thanks for the explanation. i think it sounds really good. i need to get to work finding that sound with my own stuff.

Just out of interest, Is the mic pointing at an angle or straight at the grill?

It's pointing straight in at the grille ;)

Frown. The site is blocked at my work... You should post it on lightningmp3 or something.

The guitar sounds really good to me, Metalhead. (Listening on headphones)

My experience with 57's on cabs so far has been that they sound a bit boxy. We got a little better sound using a Sennheiser 421. This sounds good and full, though.

Nice job.

Thanks. I've been trying to convince myself to pick up a 421 for a while now. One of these days I'll just go get one.

nice sounds man. The distortion is perfect. What did you have your drive set to?

Thanks.
I had an overdrive in front but with the the gain on zero, I was just cranking up the output a bit. The preamp gain was on about 6, and the master volume was on about 3.

Sounds really good to me...nice and full ....clear as well when playing chords ...nice!

Sounds good, nice, full and clear. Personally for the metal sound though I like to hear it more boomy and distorted on the bottom end, it sounds darker, muhaha.

Hey Metalhead,

I like the sound of the guitar you have dialled in here! The clarity is still there amongst the total 4 guitar tracks.
Are the four tracks recorded seperately or just layered from the one original track?
I would like to hear a tad more bottom end on the guitars just to ease some of the brittleness that may creep in if the bass guitar is not covering the lows fully.

Nice work Metalhead! You have to be pleased with that!! :)

Sounds good with the chording - actually sounds like guitars instead pf a processed product - good work.
I'm not so keen on the sound in the chugging part - but then againit's the gugging I don't actually like.
Nicely recorded & the distortion, as I said, sounds like guitars as they should so I'm happy. gorty may have a point as he knows guitar & generally puts up really good guitar sounds when he posts (which hasn't been too often of late Gorty - when when when?)

Sounded good man - sounded dead on for a modern death metal tone. Kinda reminded me of Iced Earth for some reason.

peace

I checked it out and I think it's great! Good job man! Tight & powerful. maybe go with a heavier buzzier Kings X - Dogman era type bass sound to compliment it.
