Hi everyone need your opinion on the mix on my band's first song on youtube! It's Written by our singer and is called You Should Know - This is my first properly recorded song so just want to know what people think on the recording side :) Please like and share, Hope you enjoy!

You Should Know by No Place To Hide - YouTube

Many thanks,
Harry!

For my taste. the bass is too low in the mix and a bit muddy.
The guitars too loud except in the solo where it could do with being louder.
The drums sound a little dry and could probably do with a bit of reverb here and there.
Overall its good but theres lots of little things you could improve i dont want to go on .Just my 2 pence.

you tube compression never helps a mix either. You'd be better off posting on soundcloud and posting a link form the mp3 clinic that's what it's there for. You'll get many more replys usually to.
I liked it. It just may be my monitoring system.

I like the production values and the song a lot, don't think there's enough audible mids in the bass to be heard properly and I think the vox are too dry/not treated well enough for a recording but it's not bad at all.

Drums a lil low, I agree with a little room reverb on the drums. Vocal is very dry, vocal to load in some places, the guitar could do for a little treatment as well. Just overall dry and unbalanced.

Thanks for all the replies! How would I go about making the vocals etc less dry? My setup is decent but I'm not sure how to use tools very well, eg compression... Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

I think the vocals sound great considering they were done with maracas. I didn't know you could do that! :)

You might want to look into something like riding the levels a bit to help the mix breathe more dynamics. This can be done with volume automation, sometimes called "envelopes". For example the vocals sound nicely up front in the entire mix but the guitar solo at the end sounds a bit muffled. In other parts of the song the balance sounds better. Automation lets you make subtle corrections to the balances as you go to place the correct emphasis on each part of the song.

Just a suggestion. Overall I liked it.

As for compression, a gentle push with a levelling amp or compressor plug with a soft knee on the master buss might help to glue the parts together. Something to think about as a final polish to the mix. Personally for this type of song I'd ride it first though. Again, just a suggestion. There's more than one way to go about it.

Haha yeah ;)

Thanks Snow Lizard I will definately try some things out along with that!

Thanks for the help,
Harry :)
