hello
MAudio Duo USB Audio Interface
http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/love.music?p=p.MDODUO&z=1619281666116

or the
Quattro

Has anyone ever used anything like this? Hoe well does it work? Can it record all 4 channels sperateely at once?
How is the USB interface? It seems like USB would be too slow for getting a decent recording (unless it's USB 2.0 but the description does not mention) It seems like if I had this and a laptop and software I would be all set.
The guitar center by my house has them for under $200.
Opinions?

If you do a search on previous posts, you will find that alot of people have had problems with these - mostly due to the drivers.

Customer reviews for this product at ZZounds.com aren't very good...

A BIT ON USB:

-slower than a 15-pin PCI cable connection
-smaller bandwidth (not able to have any more than 2ins and 2outs running at any one time)
-convenient (ideal for laptops or extra MIDI setups apart from card)

The real deciding factor here is what you intend to record. Do you want to track drums? The Quattro or Duo won't be sufficient for such a task. If all you want to do is record keyboard, guitars and vocals separtately, then you're fine. USB can be deceiving, it would seem like a sweet setup, but you're limited. Think this: there is very very little expansion that can be done to a USB setup other than buying more USB units or installing a new soundcard in. Don't get stuck!

Quatro

Doesn't support newer WDM drivers only MME drivers so your stuck with two in (1 stereo) i/o in a prog like Sonar. Found the midi to be reliable except on Logic but I think that is the problem with the prog. which I have seen mentioned on some posts. You can record four tracks at once using a prog that supports asio drivers at 16 bit which is all you should need anyway. I tracked drums with four mics on a Compaq laptop 2.4ghz/5xxmb ram and a quatro with no trouble. Bottom line: Save more money and go firewire...The Motu 896's should drop in the near future when this NEW??? technology for audio comes out soon.

i had the Duo and I sold it on ebay and got the Tascam US-428. I have a sound-card from the company that makes the US-428 for Tascam so I knew it would be good and i wasn't disappointed.

i like the sound i got from the duo (as far as sound quality), but there were just too many problems with the drivers.
