Opinions on Autowah, nothing fancy though...

I'm going to get something, I'm still researching and looking for sound clips. I've narrowed it down to 4 or 5 that seem ok. Not sure about the accuracy of these prices though, and how much I wanna pay for what I want, or if I'm gonna end up paying for stuff I will never use, etc.....

This started with my Interest in the Voodoo Lab "Wahzoo" but they keep putting off the release and I'm tired of waiting on them.

The ones with the * are the ones I think - so far - have the best sound clips:

I'm curious about what the EHX Q-Tron will do that the Mini Q-Tron won't do.....I tried the Doctor Q this afternoon and was not impressed at all. Too sensitive with no "in between" and too many obnoxious harmonics in the sound.

I actually found a video of the Pigtronix EP1 made by the guy who invented the thing. The Pigtronix was linked to from the Tonefactor web site. The video ironically made me feel LESS impressed with the unit. Not sure if I would prefer the EP1 over the EHX stuff.

But so far I'm most impressed by the Tonefactor sound clips and the Tonefactor web site. I like the Analog Filter and the Nebula (phaser). Too bad they are $120 bucks, if they were cheaper I'd buy them both. But I suppose they wouldn't sound as good then.....
 
Which one did Jerry Garcia use? Whatever it was, it was the smoothest envelope filter I have heard. I have had a couple of them, and they didn't sound nearly as good.
 
No matter what autowah you get, how you play is very critical to the filter response you're going to get. If you're heavy handed, the response is going to seem too sensitive all the time. You might want to roll down the volume on your guitar a little bit too.

The one I use is a Boss SYB-3 Bass Synthesizer. It has a bunch of settings, and the last 2 are forward & reverse auto-wah (or I guess auto wah & auto ow). It was like $220 new when I bought it (late 99 I think), but I'm sure they're available on ebay for cheaper now.
 
I think the voice in that video is Zach Vex (is that his name?) the guy who makes the pedals. There are tons of videos on YouTube of all of his pedals, and I found them interesting. He has another pedal using that proximity plate thing, just can't remember what.

So maybe the reason I am unimpressed with some of these units is because of the way I play. I tend to strum and pick hard a lot.... maybe that's where I'm getting those obnoxious harmonics I dont like?

too bad they wont let me rent one of these things for a month......
 
I own a Mini Q-tron and I LOVE it! Best pedal I ever bought. Responds well to nearly every guitar, can go from mild (low Q) to bursting your eardrums (max Q), and even has a LP/BP/HP switch. The Low Pass mode leaves your bass completely in tact, even if you run a 5 strings bass through it! It just sounds phat. The band pass is great for I smaller, less obtrusive tone, and the high pass is not that usefull but can do some funny stuff. I modded it to add a volume control, because it also boosted my signal a bit.

I don't know about the Q tron, but the Mini definately has it's own character. It's dirt cheap too. Contact me if you want some samples.
