Given my needs, would it be silly to pay more for the better kit?

I live in a residential area and have to do most of my recording after 1 AM. I'm a perfectly capable, experienced drummer who hates hand-programming MIDI drums. So, my intention is to MIDI-out from a V-Kit, run the info through EZ Drummer, and end up with realistic drum tracks.

Therefore, my priority isn't the module's sounds, but 1.) it's ability to output realtime MIDI, including velocity information, and 2.) It's feel. Both of these kits have "realistic" mesh pads (no hard rubber). I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this recording method, or these two V-Drum kits, and could offer any insight.

Your input is VERY appreciated. Thanks so much!

I have a Hart Dynamics kit and a series of drum brains in the studio including TD-20, TD-8 and Alesis DM5. I've used all of these modules to trigger DFHS, DFH C&V, EZDrummer, BFD, and Addictive Drums. EZDrummer uses general midi so it is really straight forward. You may also want to look for a Roland TD-3 module since they are relatively inexpensive.

sorry- thread stealing here...

so being in a nearly identical situation to xgarmothx...

which would give the most versatility and be most advantageous if one didn't really want the internal sounds?- it will be only for samples.

Could one do as much with a DM5 by finding an old D4 since it's almost entirely MIDI information?

If you plan on using it just for the MIDI component any brain will do; it will come down to budget & the number of inputs you need on the device.
